The Charaka Saṃhitā describes Mukhalepana — the application of herbal paste to the face —
as a practice of restoration, not decoration. These herbs were chosen for that purpose.
The mask works as three things: as a powder mask mixed with liquid and left on the skin; as a
gentle scrub, activated by water and worked in slow circles; or as a nightly cleanser, rinsed
immediately after a 30-second massage. What it does depends on how you use it, and what
you mix it with depends on your constitution.
